    July 2023

    Hi Everyone

Well, another successful Meander was held on 27th July with the participants being Kent Bush, Howard Trevenen, Ken Beattie, Tony Murphy, Chris Bothams, Peter Hall, Roger Bennetts, Andrew Birnie (Guest) and yours truly.

The days leading up to the event were somewhat damp and there was some consternation in the organizing camp as to whether or not there would be sufficient starters. No such fears on the day as one after the other the attendees rolled into Holly Raye’s in Bassendean for the traditional coffee (and not so much cake this time) kickoff.

What was noted and of some concern at this early juncture, was the arrival of Messrs. Bothams and Hall in a vehicle of German origin which lacked any resemblance to the finer Japanese machinery parked about the establishment. Also of concern at this point was Tony’s admission that he had spent some time trying to find the café in the school over the road because “that was number 3”.

Roger Bennetts thought his luck had changed as he approached the café and was accosted by an attractive young lady who, not satisfied with his initial response, followed him inside. Apparently, she was on the lookout for a 280zx with crushed velvet upholstery, like her mother used to have, and was keen to know if anyone had one for sale. We gave her Martin Falconer’s contact details and she moved on.

As the route instructions were handed out to the eagerly anticipating masses, there was a collective groan, probably due to the full page of destinations listed. It was explained that they only needed to be referred to if someone got separated from the group and that there was no expectation of having to read and drive at the same time. A collective sigh around the table was followed by an exodus from HR’s as the Japanese machinery lined up with the German marque relegated to sweeper at the back of the field.

The initial drive meandered through Guildford, South Guildford and the Great Eastern Highway Bypass where we could let the girls stretch their legs out to 100 Km/h. From there it was up through Helena Valley, Darlington, Glen Forrest and across to Parkerville. One of the highlights of this first section was the number of road works we were able to encounter and be involved in, which really did take some serious organizing and drew suitable comments from the group. We did experience a little bit of rain on this section as well, but fortunately, that was it for the day.

From Parkerville we headed north to Toodyay Road, took a right then a quick left into O’Brien Road. For those who have not driven this road, you really have missed something special – it is a great driving road. Unfortunately, one that has claimed the life of one of the legends of Australian motorsport.

We stopped at a nice spot along the way to the Brock Memorial and, as usual, when this crew get together there is no lack of conversation. Have to make special mention of Kent Bush who correctly pointed out that the route instructions were not followed at one particular point and that we should have turned left into Great Eastern Highway before proceeding to Parkerville. Yep, spot on. Last minute change that I thought no one would notice, but there you go. Well done, Kent. Howard informed us that it was possible to travel this road in one of our cars at 80 Km/h for the entire distance, even though some of the corners were signed as low as 30 Km/h. He should know, he has lived in the area and knows the road well. We didn’t try it.

After taking in the view, having a chat and making the most of a photo opportunity we progressed to the Peter Brock Memorial – a small plaque and rock with Brocky ‘s name and details. It’s about 200 metres from the actual crash site and you can walk back to the stump that is left of the tree that was the offending item in his demise. A bit more conversation, another photo opportunity and back into the cars for the final run to lunch.

En route, we encountered a beautiful Australian Shepherd (dog) in the middle of the road, and he was keen to follow us as we passed. We all managed to miss him (although Tony gave it a good shot apparently) and in the end it was too much for the sweeper who stopped, got the dog into the German marque and took it up to the nearby farmhouse where the owner was very happy to relieve Chris and Peter of their much-loved animal.

Lunch, responsible liquid intake and (you guessed it) a lot more conversation ensued, and we finally called it stumps after a couple of hours at the Noble Falls Tavern. It was a leisurely drive home from the tavern for all the team and an enjoyable day was had by all.

Hope to see you at the next one.

    Paul

    June 2023

    Hello Members,

Our June Meander followed the tried and tested formular of coffee at our meeting point, followed by a pleasant drive and finally lunch. Sure makes for a great day out.

This month's participants were George Kallidis, Tony Murphy, Paul Maisey Chris Bothams, Kent Bush and me.

We met for coffee at The Organic Circle, located in Pioneer Village Armadale. Despite the coffee being organic it tasted very nice. As did the muffins. We spent some time chatting and catching up (a little too long truth be known, my fault). Then we set off through the Perth Hills, passing Churchman Brook Dam and Araluen Botanic Park. Arriving at a special interest place, The Perth Observatory. A drive which all the Z pilots thoroughly enjoyed.

We spent about an hour in the Perth Observatory Museum and grounds taking in the history of this Perth icon. Very interesting and enjoyable.

Then it was just a short drive to our lunch spot. The Core Cidery. We responsibly had a sample of their wares and indulged in some very fine pizzas.

Another very enjoyable day out with likeminded Zed Heads. Hope that you can join us soon.

    Midweek Meander 25 May

Today’s meander started off with coffee at Yahava KoffeeWorks in the Valley.  Thanks to Peter Hall’s weather forecasting crystal ball and scheduling skills it was a beautiful Autumn Day.  Peter, this is the standard that we expect for future runs.

We had 8 Zeds and 10 Members and guests participating. Photographs of participants enjoying a coffee and of the Zeds gleaming in the sun are enclosed as attachments 1-4.

Following a pleasant coffee it was time to head to the Victoria Hotel in Toodyay. Given that Peter had a passenger, a well known club member who will remain nameless, it was decided that Peter would lead the way as he had a "navigator".  This was a mistake as navigation is not a skill that track drivers must develop.   As we progressed along Toodyay Road our "navigator" was allegedly commenting that it was the longest strait he had experienced without a chicane.

It was a very pleasant run and almost too soon we arrived at the Victoria Hotel where we followed our lead vehicle, following the instructions of his  "navigator" into the hotel car park.  I ask members to review photograph 5 and determine if there was an issue with our car park entry.

Following a very pleasant lunch Peter led the group home taking a detour along a section of the Targa West route.  Peter was noted securing his phone with google maps to a holder on the windscreen before departing.   Again the Zeds enjoyed the open road as we drove home.

    A most enjoyable day.

    Midweek  Meander 27 April 2023

Today’s meander started off with morning tea at Pasta in the Valley as a meeting place and then on to The Lakes roadhouse along Great Eastern Highway.

The weather looked threatening but did not break all day. The roads were dry and no rain dared to dampen the cars or our spirits. We had three drivers today willing to risk it.

Apologies received from Kent Bush, Peter Hall and Roger Bennetts. Sounded like they really wanted to come but life got in the way this time.

We were graced with the presence of the owner of Pasta in the Valley for a morning tea chat about why things were so much better before!!

Left to right: Mick Hailand, The Big Boss, Paul Maisey, Tony Murphy.

This time we have added a small competition for spotting 5 road signs along the way. Tony is holding the hint sheets.

After a couple of hours, and before we settled in for the day, we decided to move on and head up Greenmount Hill on the way to The Lakes roadhouse.

Three Z’s roared up the hill in the outside lane. One 240Z, one 260Z and one 280ZX – all three marques together.

Outside Sawyers Valley we were able to blow out the cobwebs from under the cars until we reached The Lakes roadhouse and parked.

Mick’s 240Z has just been run in and was happy to get out and about. It has a chassis number of S30-000105!!!

Paul has just completed the full nut and bolt restoration of his silver 260Z 2+2 up in Glen Forrest. It had been on the rotisserie for two and a half years.

The 280ZX in the background is watching them both like a big brother.

Competition hint sheet was a bit cryptic but Mick ended up with the greater score and got the prize.

After lunch and much Datsun tragic’s  topical discussion it was back to Perth and down the hill once more. Cars garaged by about 3pm.

October's Mid-week meander was another very pleasant day out with our little group. We started the day with a coffee at Kings Park, then meandered our way along the coast to Mullaloo. There we enjoyed a scrumptious pub lunch.

Thanks to Roger for organising the outing and for playing "mother duck" and keeping all of his brood of Zeds in a group for the drive.

Stand by for more news on next month's adventure.

    Midweek Meander September 2022

This month’s (September) Midweek Meander was organised by George Kallidis, and what a great job he did.  The weather was near perfect, and the destinations and the coastal drive were excellent choices. We had the best turn out yet for the meander, nine participants and seven Zeds.

Thanks, George, for a great day out.
